The new Archaeological Museum of Patras was designed by Theofanis Bobotis and opened in 2009. Its spectacular architecture that I find very convincing combines different materials - metal, stone, wood - on the façade. |

One element is a spherical dome of titanium above an artificial pool, reminding of the strategic location of Patras at the sea. |

On the 8000 m2 of the exhibition halls objects are presented from 3000 BC until the 6th century AD. - Above left: Bronze Age sites of western Achaia from where finds are in the museum. - Above right: Strainer, with deep bowl and one handle. Katarraktis, Middle Helladic Period (early 17th century BC). - Below: Large pithoid amphora with four handles and a mastoid end for the transportation and preservation of liquids. It is an example of matt-painted pottery and one of the biggest Achaean vases of the Middle Helladic Period. It was discovered at Katarraktis (Drakotrypa) and dates from the end of the 18th century BC. |
